The Power of Appreciation: A Small Act with a Big Impact

Did you know that appreciation and recognition are one of the top three factors that lead to employee job satisfaction? I love that fact because it confirms something I’ve seen again and again — when people feel appreciated, they thrive.

Appreciation is such a simple act, yet it has extraordinary power. It fuels connection, lifts morale, and reminds us that our work — and our presence — matter. Whether you’re leading a team, supporting a colleague, raising a family, or simply moving through your day, expressing genuine appreciation can change how people show up and how you feel too.

The Ripple Effect of Appreciation at Work

Appreciation is more than a “nice-to-have.” It’s a performance driver. In the workplace, appreciation creates belonging. Employees who feel valued are more likely to stay, more willing to go above and beyond, and more invested in their work. Recognition creates connection—and that connection drives results.

And the best part? Appreciation doesn’t need to come from the top down. I’ve seen entire cultures shift when peers start acknowledging each other’s efforts. A simple “thank you for catching that detail” or “I appreciate how you handled that client conversation” can transform the energy of a team.

When recognition becomes a habit rather than a special occasion, workplaces become more positive, productive, and resilient.

Appreciation in Everyday Life

The beauty of appreciation is that it doesn’t have to be grand to be powerful. In fact, it’s often the small, consistent gestures that make the biggest difference. Appreciation shouldn’t stop at the office. It’s something we can—and should—practice everywhere. I try to think of it as a daily mindset, not a moment.

Here are some small but meaningful ways you can show appreciation every day:

  • Say it and mean it. Take a moment to thank someone directly with a simple, heartfelt “thank you” —whether it’s a coworker, a friend, or a family member. Be specific about what you value: “I really appreciate how you handled that client call with such calm and professionalism.” and “Thank you for making dinner tonight, it really helped after my long day” land differently than a quick “thanks.”
  • Send a message. A quick text to a friend, a note to a mentor, a public shoutout in a meeting, or a comment on someone’s post can make their day.
  • Show up. Sometimes the best form of appreciation is your presence — listening fully, showing interest, or being there when it counts.
  • Celebrate effort, not just outcomes. Recognize the process, the progress, and the perseverance, not only the win.
  • Give genuine compliments. Point out what you see in others — their patience, humor, creativity, or kindness.
  • Practice gratitude out loud. Share one thing you’re grateful for at dinner, in a meeting, or before bed. It sets a tone.
  • Pay it forward. When someone helps you, pass that energy along — hold the door, buy a coffee, or offer a word of encouragement to someone else.
  • Build it into your culture. Start meetings with a moment of gratitude or end the week by recognizing contributions. Small rituals create lasting impact.
  • Acknowledge yourself. Appreciation starts from within. Notice your own growth, your efforts, and the ways you show up for others.

These little actions create a ripple effect. The more you express gratitude, the more you start to see the good around you — and that awareness alone can shift your entire day. When we practice appreciation, we shift our focus from what’s missing to what’s working—and that mindset shift changes everything.

A Season for Gratitude

As Thanksgiving approaches, I find myself reflecting on all that I’m grateful for. My family, who ground and inspire me every single day. My friends and colleagues, who bring joy, challenge, and meaning to my work. And this community — all of you who read, share, comment, and engage with such heart and thoughtfulness.

Your curiosity, your generosity, and your willingness to keep learning make this community so special. And I am truly thankful for it.

So as we move into this season of gratitude, I invite you to slow down and notice what — and who — you appreciate. Say it out loud. Write it down. Share it generously. Because appreciation costs nothing, but it changes everything.
