It’s warming up and that means I am walking outside again. I love walking with a friend or planning a catch-up call while walking. I also love walking alone, listening to audio books, and generally getting inspired by what’s around me.
I have always been a nature girl. My sister actually used to call me a granola, though I never wore socks with sandals and never will. The only time I didn’t mind getting woken up at the crack of dawn was when the birds and frogs were my alarm clock in Belize.
I am lucky to live near the South Mountain reservation which has miles of hiking trails. I love weaving through the fallen trees and over the creeks. Taking in the beauty inspires me and gets me thinking. This time the thought is a little off my beaten path.
Have you ever thought about what we can learn about leadership from trees? Stay with me here… An easy association is that trees offer shelter and protection from the elements. After all, a great leader has your back. They can be the buffer between you and challenging colleagues.
Trees embody resilience and adaptability, qualities every leader can learn from. With their deep roots and towering branches, trees remind us of the importance of staying grounded while reaching for the sky. Just as trees withstand storms and seasons, leaders must cultivate resilience to navigate challenges and emerge stronger.
Here are a few leadership lessons inspired by trees:
Deep Roots: Like trees, leaders must establish strong foundations in their values and vision. When you work from purpose, shared purpose, you are rooted in that clarity. This stability allows you to weather any storm.
Adaptability: Trees change with the seasons, shedding leaves and growing anew. Embrace change as an opportunity for growth and innovation.
Interconnectedness: Trees communicate through root systems, supporting each other. Often trees are so intertwined that they grow or fall together. Foster a network of support among your team to thrive collectively.
In my Connected Leader Course, we delve deeper into these principles, exploring how natural resilience can be mirrored in leadership. This program is designed to enhance your ability to connect, engage, and lead with authenticity.
I am adaptable too and created a self-paced version for those who were unable to join a live cohort. Take your time or fly through the less than two hours of video content. Register Here.
