How To Get a Handle on Social Media

We need to focus on how to get a handle on social media.

People often ask me what I think about social media. I’ll tell you what I think: it’s great! And sometimes it’s not so great.

It’s one more channel we can use to connect with people and deepen our relationships.  At first it surprised me that I was able to build real relationships that started out with a connection request.

On the flip side, I am the parent of a 12 and 14 year old.  I hear some horrible stories about how cruel people can be online. Fortunately, my kids have limited exposure and interest. With young minds there is a risk of self worth correlating to online activity.

It can happen with adults too. We try to be everywhere and with so many platforms, it can become consuming.

But, social media can also bring us a lot of joy, especially during this crazy year.

With the holiday season upon us we can use social media to connect with loved ones who we may not be able to see in person, here are a few suggestions for you to get a handle on social media:

  1. Try scheduling video meetings with extended family.
  2. Or set up a recipe exchange to share your favorite recipes and connect over holiday food!
  3. Last weekend a group of 12 local families did an 80’s and 90’s trivia night –  which made me realize I watched way too much TV in the 80’s!

Technology and social media are great. But don’t feel like you have to use EVERY platform to connect with loved ones. Find one that works for you, and stick with it!

My tip…start by looking at the connections you have and see what social media makes the most sense for enhancing those relationships.
