In the leadership session I facilitated last week, I asked the participants to list the qualities of a great leader. Would it surprise you that a leader’s ability to do the job, nor any technical skill whatsoever, was on the list? I have asked this question to thousands and the job-based skills are never on that list. Instead, they describe the qualities of a Connected Leader. They list words like, supportive, listens, trusts, empowers, shares information, and gives feedback.
I define a Connected Leader as someone who…
- Prioritizes relationships in everything they do, they care about you and the things you care about
- Understands the power of connection and is a leader people want to follow
- Is open, vulnerable, transparent and kind
- Is trusted and trusting
- Thinks holistically versus transactionally
- Listens, coaches, supports and empowers
- Leverages their network to exponentially advance results for themselves and others
Sounds great. The challenge is people often get promoted because of their ability to do the job and not the knowledge of how to lead others to do their job. It is a completely different skill set and a different way to think about how our time is spent.
