We are in the middle of running two cohorts in our Connected Leader Course. My favorite activity is called, My Story.
The idea behind this activity is to reflect on what makes you, you. What are the main events that shaped the way you think? What makes you smile? What scares you? What are your aspirations and what support do you need?
In essence, you are figuring out what aspects you are open to sharing and interested in discovering about someone else. We ask you to embrace the qualities of a Connected Leader, to be open, curious, and vulnerable.
This assignment is a way to see what we are willing to share of ourselves to find our connection points.
Though I have done this exercise many times, each time I revise my story. Recently, I added a new descriptor for me. Hyper-productive.
Although that might sound great, it doesn’t always feel great. Sometimes I am so go, go go, that I don’t leave any room to be slow, slow, slow, or for anybody else around me to take that break.
I often walk around my house thinking about what needs to get done. I am checking in with my husband and kids asking, “what are you working on?”
I forget, not everything has to be productive.
I started thinking about the next sticky note I need to put on my desk.
In my newsletter, Do You Know How To Say No?, I wrote about my husband leaving a sticky note with the word NO on it to remind me of that option.
This time, my sticky note needs to say, What If This Didn’t Get Done? I’ve been starting to ask myself that question.
What would happen if something didn’t get done or didn’t get done right then?
What if there’s that webinar, that call, that conference, or that thing the school is putting on? What if I didn’t go? What if I didn’t listen? What if it didn’t get done? Does it really have an impact on my daily life? Probably not.
There are other ways that I am involved with my kids’ school, there are other ways that I keep learning, and there are other things that I’m doing to build my business. So, what if that didn’t get done?
My challenge for you this week is to create a not-to-do list. What are the things that we can either delegate, or just eliminate?
I have to be honest, one of the things I’m thinking about getting rid of is social media.
What do you think? What are you going to get rid of?
