I’m sure you’ve heard some version of the phrase, “You reap what you sow,” or “What goes around comes around,” or even “Karma’s a bitch.” There are so many idioms and proverbs based on the idea that the universe rewards (or punishes) you for your positive contributions. There is obviously a reason this sentiment has been so often repeated and reworked. I even have a version of it in my book.
I was recently a guest on the Jesse Tee Show where this idea happened to come up. Jesse asked me about ways to change your mindset about something, particularly in the workplace. Part of my answer was about showing up in a positive way during negative situations. I like to play a game during those times, where I try my hardest to make at least one person smile (you should try it!). Jesse then brought up the concept of the energy you put out into the world coming back to you. So whether you want more love, happiness, peace as he says, “Whatever you want more of, put more of it in the world.”
Jesse nailed it and it comes back to the 4th Law of Likability: Energy is contagious. As a kid my dad used to hold me up in front of the mirror, and tell me to “smile,” and I’d smile, or “scowl,” and I’d see that same face scowling back at me. He would say that the world is a mirror; what you give, is what you get. No, the world is not perfect. But more often than not, if you show kindness, you receive kindness. When you open yourself up to the world, you open yourself up to its generosity.
I challenge you today to reflect on what it is you want more of, and the actionable ways you can pour that energy into the world. You will be amazed how your life can change once you start living by this simple concept.
