Do you ever think about why you say YES to some requests and NO to others?
Some obvious reasons may jump to your mind… You actually want to do what they are asking. You think doing what is being asked will benefit your growth. You want to do it for the person who is asking simply because they asked. You feel you have no choice but to say yes. And sometimes you just go with your gut.
For me, decision making comes down to asking myself three key questions. What those questions are have changed over the years based on the current goals and priorities.
I receive tons of invitations to guest on a podcast, contribute to a book, speak at a summit or for a pro bono event, be interviewed, write an article, the list goes on. As a result, I have to be really clear on my decision criteria, or I will YES myself into exhaustion!
So, when I was asked recently to guest on a summit, my instinct was to decline without a second thought. Perhaps it was the authentic invitation, and the fact that she found me through a mutual contact, that instead, I scheduled a call to learn more.
Here is what I learned about the Holistic Business Summit: Build Smarter. Shine Brighter. Thrive Without Burnout summit and its organizer Nancy. She is bringing together 9 top experts in business strategy, pricing, mindset, email marketing, social media, networking, and more — all tailored to entrepreneurs who want to grow without burning out.
Boy did I relate to that mission having felt burnout often over the last 20 years in business. I quickly went through my three questions:
- Is it related to my core mission? This is the first hurdle; it is much harder to get to YES if it doesn’t fit into the work, I feel compelled to do. If you are wondering what that is… I want to enable people to communication to connect and as a result increase their influence and impact.
- Is it for a person important to me? Sometimes I just want to say YES to some people whether to build, nurture, or honor a relationship in my life. This is one of my most compelling reasons.
- Is there another reason to say yes? This is my catch all where my gut, the organization, the audience, the fee or some other reason that is compelling enough for me to say yes if I want to.
Nancy got to YES with all three questions, so that was the answer I gave, and I am excited to share the summit with all of you. The Holistic Business Summit: Build Smarter. Shine Brighter.
